There are many ways to eat a grain like Quinoa. It is too expensive to eat it in large quantities or as the key ingredient like oats or rice in a recipe. So I usually mix a little into salads, soups, rice, porridge, etc. Luckily, cooking quinoa is very easy and fast. But it will be a hassle to cook a small quantity each time. So I usually cook 1 cup and store it in the fridge, using whatever needed for a recipe. Usually that cup lasts me 2 days to a week depending on what we are eating.

Here I am sharing how to cook quinoa by itself. This method of cooking quinoa will give it an aromatic, nutty flavour. Some people recommend just boiling the quinoa. I used to do that. But it is not as fragrant as frying it first then boiling.

After you have cooked your quinoa, you can refer to the quinoa recipes for ideas on how to use the quinoa. But really, let your creativity roll!

Method 2: Steam with Rice

The other day, a friend asked how to enjoy a healthier yet equally tasty version of chicken rice if we don’t have white rice. Well, one way is to replace some of the white rice with quinoa! Of course you can also mix in 20% of brown rice or black rice with white rice too, but eating with quinoa.

Another favourite rice from my mum is to do a blend of 1 portion black rice, 1 portion basmati rice, 1 portion quinoa and 1 portion brown rice. 1 cup of rice to 1.4 cups of water, add some olive oil and a pinch of salt. It tastes great as it is with other dishes and can also be used in fried rice. In fact she did a very lovely vegetarian fried rice for me during Chinese New Year as I am vegetarian during CNY.

Here, I will share a recipe of basmati rice, black rice, purple sweet potato and quinoa. This dark looking rice is not only packed with super foods and very nutritious, it is also super tasty as the soft sweet potato gives a soft starch mouth feel to the rice, making up for the loss of softness from white rice.

Method 3: Cook with Porridge

I will share how you can enjoy a nutritious and even more tasty variety of the usual white porridge with sweet potato with this brown rice, pumpkin and quinoa variation.

Heat pan

Heat up sauce pan over medium heat and add oil.

Add Quinoa

Add quinoa and stir in pot till nutty aroma is released and hear some popping noise.

Add water

Add water to pan and lower the fire to small. Cover and simmer for 15 min. Cook till all water absorbed and quinoa is soft.
Serve hot or cool and store in container in fridge.
